Citizen Movements Revitalising Democracy: Report

Political Parties and Citizen Movements in Asia and Europe
International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance

The report by the Asia-Europe Foundation, the Hanns Seidel Foundation and International IDEA states that there is widespread concern that many political parties lack democratic structures, fail to include diverse groups and don't develop sophisticated policies.

In response, citizen-led movements and civil society organisations have become more prominent, particularly those organised through social media.

These movements, which usually have a large proportion of young people, are having a growing influence and impact on democratic processes in both Asia and Europe as they bring together community-based voices and organise political protest.

In the process they are circumventing political parties as the traditional entry points for political participation and citizen representation.
