Summary:

The authors propose a number reforms to modernise Australia's electoral process and make it more transparent, particularly in relation to political donations.

Their recommendations include:

  • Introducing caps on political donations to limit the size of donations
  • Prohibiting donations from particular classes of donor that might benefit directly from government decisions
  • Establishing fixed dates for general elections and move to four year terms
  • Requiring registered parties to make their constitution publicly available; and
  • Restricting use of parliamentary resources during election campaigns
