Visualisations of Democracy

Our World in Data: Democratisation

Working from a number of historical and contemporary sources, economist Max Roser has created a number of visualisations of the state of democracy throughout the world over the last couple of centuries.

His work on democracy at the Our World in Data site includes:

  • A line graph that measures the number of democracies in the world from 1800 to the present.
  • A world map showing the democratic status of every country in the world over time from 1800 to the present.
  • A line graph that illustrates the cumulative population of the world living under various types of regimes from 1900 to the present.
  • A scatter-plot chart demonstrating the relationship between the education level of citizens and democracy.

The maps, charts and graphs are published under a Creative Commons licence and are free to use with attribution to their creator.
